Literature Text

We have heard with our ears,
our mothers have told us,
of deeds performed in their days,
in the days of old:
the destruction of nations,
people afflicted by plague.
they lived through the chaos;
but not by their sword were they saved.

Hands from the heavens,
and the lights from the sky,
delivered them into their ruin.

We push down our fears;
tread round those who would rise up against us,
to stand resolute in despair.
but still they rejected us;
still they disgraced us,
and would not travel on with our tribe.
we turn back from our foes,
and those who hate us have shunned us
we are nothing but sheep for the slaughter

We are scattered among remnants,
of nations destroyed
the taunt of our neighbors we are.
the derision and scorn of those around us.
a byword among Wardens
and a mockery among the peoples.

Everyday our disgrace is before us,
and shame has covered our faces
at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
at the sight of the enemy and avenger.

All this has come upon us,
though we have not forgotten
nor been false to our covenant.
our heart has not turned back,
nor have our steps departed from our way;
we have forgotten the name of our Gods
and spread out our hands to the sky,

For we know the secrets of our hearts;
and know one day deliverance will come

Awake!

In Exile rouse yourselves;
do not reject your brethren,
do not hide your face,
nor forget our affliction and oppression?
for while our soul is bowed down to the dust;
and our belly clings to the ground.

We shall rise up to seek the redeemer
and know our deliverance cometh.
